Janssen-Cilag

Janssen-Cilag is the umbrella name for our pharmaceutical companies operating outside of the United States. Dr. Paul Janssen established the company more than 50 years ago.

Janssen-Cilag is considered one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, producing and marketing a broad range of pharmaceutical products. All told, the company has discovered more than 80 compounds. The company also is a world leader in the production of medicines, manufacturing more than 70 percent of the active ingredients used in pharmaceuticals produced by Johnson & Johnson companies.

The geographic reach of Janssen-Cilag is expansive, with more than 50 affiliates in regions around the world, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America.

Today, Janssen-Cilag is a leader in traditional and biological medicines for a broad range of conditions in areas such as gastroenterology, fungal infections, women's health, mental health, neurology, pain, oncology, hematology and nephrology. The company markets PARIET ™ (rabeprazole sodium) for treating gastrointestinal disorders; RISPERDAL ® CONSTA TM [(risperidone) long acting injection] for treating schizophrenia; REMINYL® (galantamine hydrobromide) for treating mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease; EPREX ® /ERYPO ® (Epoetin alfa) for treating anemia; DUROGESIC ® (fentanyl transdermal system) for treating chronic, moderate to severe pain; TOPOMAX ® (topiramate) for treating epilepsy; and EVRA ® (norelgestromin/ethinyl estradiol transdermal system), the first contraceptive patch.

Several of the Janssen-Cilag marketed products result from successful partnerships. The most recent example of this expertise is the recent co-development and commercialization agreement with Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for VELCADE™ (Bortezomib).

VELCADE is a completely new approach to treating multiple myeloma that acts on the proteasome, a unique target in cells. Under the terms of the agreement, VELCADE is being co-developed by Millennium and Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. Millennium is responsible for commercialization of VELCADE in the U.S.; Ortho Biotech and Janssen-Cilag will be responsible for commercialization in Europe and the rest of the world. Janssen Pharmaceutical K.K. will be responsible for Japan.

VELCADE received market authorization in the European Union in April 2004 for treating multiple myeloma patients who have received at least two prior therapies and have demonstrated disease progression in their last therapy.
