Scios is developing novel treatments for cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disease and cancer for patients with unmet medical needs. The company's disease-based technology platform integrates expertise in protein biology with computational and medicinal chemistry to identify novel targets and rationally design small molecule compounds.
In 2001, Scios Inc. garnered international attention with the successful U.S. launch of NATRECOR ® (nesiritide) - the first new treatment for acute congestive heart failure since 1987. To date, NATRECOR has been the best selling IV cardiovascular drug ever brought to market. NATRECOR (nesiritide) is a recombinant form of endogenous human B-type natriuretic peptide (hBNP), and is approved for the intravenous treatment of patients with acutely decompensated congestive heart failure who have dyspnea (shortness of breath) at rest or with minimal activity.
Scios also markets RETAVASE ® (Reteplase), a ground-breaking therapy for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), or heart attack. RETAVASE is indicated for use in the management of AMI in adults for the improvement of ventricular function following AMI, the reduction of the incidence of congestive heart failure, and the reduction of mortality associated with AMI.
Scios' disease-based technology platform continuously integrates molecular, biological and chemical technologies throughout the entire drug development process, from target discovery and validation, through the invention of robot-based high throughput assays, to the discovery and advancement of lead drug candidates. The success of this approach led Scios to discover NATRECOR, and is fueling discovery of novel therapeutic compounds that are broadening the company's expertise in such major disease areas as inflammatory disease and cancer.
